What is an AutoPAP (or APAP)?
Unlike CPAP, which uses a fixed pressure, AutoPAP (APAP) machines automatically adjust the air pressure throughout the night based on your needs. They can detect changes in your breathing patterns and adjust the pressure accordingly, providing a more customized approach. Because of this, APAP can be easier to adjust to than CPAP. The capacity to automatically fluctuate in pressure settings can be particularly useful if your pressure needs vary during different sleep stages or if you experience fluctuations in airway obstruction.
What is CPAP
This device provides a continuous, steady stream of air to keep your airways open while you sleep. To determine the right pressure setting for you, a sleep study is often conducted in a sleep lab, where you might stay overnight connected to a lot of wires and sensors. This study determine the pressure setting needed to prevent airway collapse throughout the night.
APAP (Auto-titrating Positive Airway Pressure) and CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) are both types of devices used to treat sleep apnea via PAP therapy, but they operate a bit differently.
Both treatments aim to keep your airways open and improve your sleep quality, but APAP offers a bit more flexibility in pressure adjustment compared to the fixed pressure of CPAP.
Essential Features Of CPAP / APAP Machines
For an optimal CPAP/APAP therapy experience, all machines should be equipped with several essential features: a ramp function to ease users into their prescribed pressure, expiratory pressure relief (EPR) to enhance comfort during exhalation, auto start and stop capabilities for convenience, and heated humidity to prevent dryness and irritation. These features collectively ensure a more comfortable and effective sleep therapy experience.
Rest assured, all of our PAP machines include these options.
Available APAP Models
We’ll analyze the key difference between the ResMed AirSense 10 APAP, the ResMed AirSense 11 APAP, and the ResMed AirMini Travel APAP.
If you travel, and you find value in a tiny but mighty APAP, skip to the ResMed AirMini Travel APAP section further below. If you don’t have a need for a compact, travel-oriented, PAP machine, then keep reading for the AirSense 10 & AirSense 11.
Ultimately, it may come down to budget.
The AirSense 11 is the upgrade to the AirSense 10, so it is more expensive. To be exact, it’s between $250 - $350 more expensive, with fluctuations expected based on the market’s demand at your time of purchase.
The AirSense 11 boasts a look that rivals sleek and minimalistic home decor. The AirSense 10, while still visually attractive, stands to be several inches larger both height and weight wise.
In addition to the upgrades to its appearance, the AirSense 11 has several technology-based upgrades.
ResMed AirMini Travel CPAP / APAP Features
