Traveling With A CPAP
Traveling with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine can be a smooth experience if you’re prepared and know the airline policies.
Keep your CPAP machine and accessories in an easily accessible place.
Bring cleaning supplies for your CPAP mask and tubing to ensure they remain clean during your trip.
Before your flight, inform your airline about your CPAP needs. Some airlines require advance notice.
Bring a doctor’s letter or a copy of your prescription to facilitate smooth travel.
Consider travel-sized CPAP machines or accessories designed for air travel to make the journey easier.
FUN FACT: The ResMed AirMini will make it 1,000% easier to continue using your PAP therapy during your travels - stick it in your purse or your backpack (it’s tiny) and never worry about having to find distilled water again (waterless humidification).
Airline Guide
Here’s a guide on how to take your CPAP on a plane, including information from three major airlines: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.
American Airlines CPAP Policies
You can bring your CPAP machine as a carry-on item. It does not count towards your carry-on luggage limit. At the security checkpoint, you’ll need to remove the CPAP machine from its case and place it in a separate bin for screening. American Airlines allows the use of CPAP machines on board, and you may need to inform the flight attendants once you’re on the plane. Power outlets are not available on all flights, so ensure your CPAP backup battery is fully charged. For more details, visit the American Airlines Travel Information page.
Delta Air Lines CPAP Policies
Delta allows CPAP machines to be brought on board as a carry-on item and does not count it towards your carry-on limit. You must remove the CPAP machine from its case for separate screening at the security checkpoint. Delta provides power outlets on some aircraft, but not all. Confirm with Delta before your flight and bring a fully charged battery backup as a backup. For more details, check Delta’s Special Assistance page.
United Airlines CPAP Policies
You can bring your CPAP machine as an additional carry-on item without counting towards your standard carry-on limit. At security, the CPAP machine must be removed from its case and screened separately. United Airlines offers power outlets on certain aircraft, but it’s wise to have a fully charged battery backup as not all flights will have this feature. Visit United’s Accessibility Services page for more information.
