Do I Need To Replace CPAP Supplies?

Various components and accessories need to be regularly replaced to ensure the effectiveness, comfort, and hygiene of your CPAP equipment and PAP therapy.

CPAP Supplies To Replace Include:

CPAP Masks

“How often to replace CPAP masks?” Is easily the most common question we receive with regards to CPAP supplies.

The mask is a crucial component of CPAP therapy, and its proper fit and seal are essential for effective treatment. Over time, CPAP masks may become worn out, lose their seal, or accumulate dirt and oils from the skin, leading to discomfort and reduced effectiveness. It's generally recommended to replace CPAP masks every 3 months.

CPAP Mask Cushions/Seals

The cushion or seal of the CPAP mask is the part that comes into direct contact with the face and creates a seal to deliver pressurized air effectively. Cushions can degrade over time, leading to leaks and discomfort. Depending on the mask type and manufacturer's recommendations, mask cushions should be replaced every 2-4 weeks (nasal masks - 2 weeks, full face masks - 4 weeks).

CPAP Headgear and Straps

The headgear and straps of the CPAP mask are responsible for securing the mask in place during sleep. These components can lose elasticity and become stretched out over time, resulting in poor mask fit and seal. It's advisable to replace CPAP headgear and straps every 3 months.

CPAP Tubing

The CPAP tubing connects the CPAP machine to the mask and delivers pressurized air to the airway. Over time, CPAP tubing may develop small tears, holes, or cracks, leading to air leaks and reduced therapy effectiveness. CPAP tubing should be replaced every 3 months.

CPAP Filters

CPAP machines are equipped with filters that help remove dust, allergens, and other particles from the air before it is delivered to the airway. Depending on the type of CPAP machine, there may be one or more filters that require regular replacement. Disposable filters should typically be replaced every 2 weeks, while reusable filters should be cleaned and replaced as per the manufacturers recommendation.

Humidifier Chambers

If your CPAP machine has a built-in humidifier, the water chamber should be regularly cleaned and replaced to prevent the growth of bacteria and mineral deposits. Humidifier chambers should be cleaned daily and replaced every 6 months.

Many patients ask, “Can you use a CPAP without water?” The answer is yes! You will need to ensure your heated humidifer is turned off, but yes, you can use your CPAP without water. You cannot however use your heated humidifier without water, unless you have the ResMed AirMini Travel CPAP.
